The Definition of ITIL and ITSM

      What is ITIL?

The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), is a set of practices for IT service management (ITSM) that focuses on aligning IT services with the needs of business. In its current form (known as ITILv3 and ITIL 2011 edition), ITIL is published in a series of five core publications, each of which covers an ITSM lifecycle stage.

ITIL describes procedures, tasks and checklists that are not organization-specific, used by an organization for establishing a minimum level of competency. It allows the organization to establish a baseline from which it can plan, implement, and measure. It is used to demonstrate compliance and to measure improvement.

The names ITIL and IT Infrastructure Library are registered trademarks of the United Kingdom's Office of Government Commerce (OGC) – now part of the Cabinet Office.

ITIL is the most widely adopted approach for IT Service Management in the world.  It provides a practical, no-nonsense framework for identifying, planning, delivering and supporting IT services to the business.
Briefly, ITIL is a public framework that describes Best Practice in IT service management.  It provides a framework for the governance of IT, the ‘service wrap’, and focuses on the continual measurement and improvement of the quality of IT service delivered, from both a business and a customer perspective. This focus is a major factor in ITIL’s worldwide success and has contributed to its prolific usage and to the key benefits obtained by those
organizations deploying the techniques and processes throughout their organizations. Some of these benefits include:

■ increased user and customer satisfaction with IT services

■ improved service availability, directly leading to increased business profits
and revenue

■ financial savings from reduced rework, lost time, improved resource
management and usage

■ improved time to market for new products and services

■ improved decision making and optimized risk.

   IT Service Management
To understand what service management is, we need to understand what services are, and how service management can help service providers to deliver and manage these services.

A service is a means of delivering value to customers by facilitating outcomes customers want to achieve without the ownership of specific costs and risks.

A simple example of a customer outcome that could be facilitated by an IT service might be: “Sales people spending more time interacting with customers” facilitated by “a remote access service that enables reliable Access to corporate sales systems from sales people’s laptops”.

The outcomes that customers want to achieve are the reason why they purchase or use the service. The value of the service to the customer is directly dependent on how well it facilitates these outcomes. Service management is what enables a service provider to understand the services they are providing, to ensure that the services really do facilitate the outcomes their customers want to achieve, to understand the value of the services to their customers, and to understand and manage all of the costs and risks associated with those services.

Service Management is a set of specialized organizational capabilities for providing value to customers in the form of services.

These “specialized organizational capabilities” are described in this pocket guide. They include all of the processes, methods, functions, roles and activities that a Service Provider uses to enable them to deliver services to their customers.

Service management is concerned with more than just delivering services. Each service, process or infrastructure component has a lifecycle, and service management considers the entire lifecycle from strategy through design and transition to operation and continual improvement.

Adopting good practice can help a service provider to create an effective service management system. Good practice is simply doing things that have been shown to work and to be effective. Good practice can come from many different sources, including public frameworks such as ITIL standards and proprietary knowledge of people and organizations.

Microsoft & Motorola Patent Fight

The patent wars between companies goes furiously. According to news, a German court ruled that Microsoft had indeed infringed on Motorola patents with technology used in its Xbox360 game consoles and Windows 7 software.

Microsoft was actually ordered to remove the offending items from the German market, a ruling that apparently can’t be enforced by Motorola. The sale last month of AOL patents to Microsoft and the sale of many of those same patents from Microsoft to Facebook are all part of this ongoing patent legal war. Patent infringement suits are frequently used to test the validity of patents, force other companies to purchase licenses for the used of patented technology or stop them from using the technology and finally to garner huge damage awards.

Threat for the 'Open Web'

In an interview published on sunday, Google's co-founder pointed attacks on the open Internet, including government censorship and interception of data, overzealous attempts to protect intellectual property, and new communication portals that use web technologies and the internet.

Google’s co-founder Brin lists several other threats to the open Web (and to Google):

• Smartphone apps, as led by Apple: "all the information in apps -- that data is not crawlable by Web crawlers. You can't search it."
• Facebook, where data goes in but never comes out: "Facebook has been sucking down Gmail contacts for many years."
• SOPA and PIPA, which Brin says would have led to the U.S. using the same content-screening technology it has criticized China and Iran for using.

Brain Drain of Google

Brain Drain, is also known as “The human capital flight”. It can be simply defined as the mass emigration of technically skilled people from one country to another country or one company to another.

Brightest people always choose to be at the side of innovation companies. When tech companies reorganizes or restructures because of loosing innovation power, smart people starts to escape to other bright companies. For example in 2010 Google wore off and lost its top skilled people. Despite of raising salaries and buying some new companies, brain drain of Google still continued. Here some articles of Harvard Business Review and others about Google brain drain.

Apple and Labor Issues

Last month I shared my opinions about Apple and cheap labor matters in my blog. That news shows us for in coming months, Apple will have a headache about labor matters.

Apple and one of its top suppliers, Hon Hai Precision agreed to a set of recommendations by the Fair Labor Association to reduce work hours and change other employment policies.

Cloud Computing Rivals and Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services is the largest cloud service provider by far. Amazon, like most of the big cloud providers, doesn’t disclose much about current or planned data centers. Accenture analyst estimates that Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) runs on a 450,000 servers. Amazon does not break out AWS revenue, but some say it could already be a billion dollar business. Here are seven cloud rivals;

1: Rackspace: Rackspace encompasses managed services and pure hosting businesses, it’s also a major cloud provider with actual, paying customers.

2: Google: Google could already be the biggest cloud player. If you count all that Google Apps and Gmail storage, then Google’s obviously a huge player.

3: Microsoft: Windows Azure has big capacity, but actual traction is unclear. Microsoft just launched an Azure focused startup accelerator in Israel to help boost demand. Next week, it is expected to announce timing for the first of its ERP products.

4: IBM: IBM SmartCloud is coming up fast.

5: Hewlett-Packard: HP’s been all over the map on cloud plans, promising an Azure-based implementation a few years ago that has gone nowhere but HP’s cloud will add features and capabilities beyond what AWS provides.

6: VMware: VMware’s vCloud already runs a ton of clouds for third-party providers, and the company’s Cloud Foundry platform-as-a-service is gaining traction.

7: Facebook:With more than 800 million users, Facebook doesn’t offer cloud services now, but then again, Amazon used to just sell books. Facebook could evolve into many things.

Apple, Cheap Labor and Turkey

Apple is currently one of the most profitable companies in the world. New York Times reported that last year it earned over 400K $ per employee more than oil, finance or software companies. Most of Apple's profit comes from cheap production and sell those products at a markup %200. It comes from cheap labor from China and also one reason for investment in China is exporting pollution says analysts . The main reason Apple left America because they don't want to deal with labor laws, pollution concerns and labor wages according to analysts.

Western countries at the center of productivity and innovation and most of eastern countries like China, India ; are attractive because of cheap labor, exporting pollution, tax concessions, etc... Turkey at innovative side or cheap production side ? When we look at the population and education politics, that population growth will make us next China, India? I don't agree with that. Production methods change quickly in accordance with market conditions and high competition. My opinion in near future cheap labor will leave its place to cheap robotics productions and green technologies.

Here some examples ;

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/15/opinion/cheap-robots-vs-cheap-labor.html?_r=1
http://www.cme-mec.ca/?lid=JCKNC-E742G-1W6JA&comaction=show&cid=4Y3YP-J994Q-39ZMY

Making plans to attract big investments with cheap labor in future will not work and China has already attempted this model.
